A tarmac driveway that is starting to look tired does not always need to be dug up and replaced. In many cases, a properly specified resurfacing overlay can restore the surface and add another decade or more of life at significantly lower cost.
The key question is whether the base beneath the worn surface is still structurally sound — and that is something you can assess yourself before you call anyone.
What is tarmac resurfacing?
Tarmac resurfacing (also called overlaying) involves laying a new wearing course of hot tarmac — typically 40mm of dense bitumen macadam — directly over the existing surface. The existing base and any binder course remain in place; only the top layer is renewed.
This is different from a full replacement, which involves excavating the existing surface and base down to formation level, rebuilding the hardcore base, and laying both binder and wearing courses from scratch.

When resurfacing works
Resurfacing is appropriate when the existing tarmac is worn, faded or showing surface cracking, but the base beneath it is still firm and well-drained. Signs that the base is sound: the surface is level with no significant settlement or rutting, there is no cracking that follows underground pipes or tree roots, the surface does not flex underfoot, and water drains off cleanly without ponding.
If all of these conditions are met, an overlay is a cost-effective solution. The new surface bonds to the existing tarmac and will perform as well as a new installation.
When resurfacing does not work
Resurfacing cannot fix a failed base. If the existing tarmac has significant cracking, rutting, settlement or areas that flex underfoot, these are signs that the base has moved. Laying a new surface over a failed base simply transfers the movement upward — the new overlay will crack in the same places within 1–2 years.
Other situations where full replacement is the right answer: the existing surface is too high relative to the damp-proof course, there are drainage problems that require excavation to fix, or the existing surface is block paving or concrete that cannot accept a tarmac overlay.
