Water pooling on a driveway is more than an inconvenience. Left unaddressed, it saturates the sub-base, accelerates surface failure and, in the worst cases, allows water to track back towards the house foundation. In Bray and north Wicklow, where annual rainfall exceeds 900mm, drainage is not a detail — it is the difference between a driveway that lasts twenty years and one that fails in five.

The law: Irish SUDS rules and what they mean for your driveway
Since 2007, Irish planning regulations have required that surface water from new or significantly altered driveways is managed on-site — it must not discharge onto the public road or into the public foul sewer. This is part of the Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) framework and is enforced by Wicklow County Council.
In practice, this means your driveway must either use a permeable surface (gravel, permeable block paving, resin bound) that allows water to soak into the ground, or include a drainage system — channel drains, gullies or a soakaway — that captures runoff and disperses it on your property.
Many older driveways pre-date this requirement and drain directly to the road. If you are replacing or extending an existing driveway, the new work must comply. A reputable contractor will design drainage into the specification from the outset; one who does not mention it is either unaware of the rules or hoping you are.
The main drainage solutions: Aco drains, soakaways and permeable paving
**Channel (Aco) drains** are the most common retrofit solution. A linear channel drain — typically 100mm or 150mm wide — is set into the surface at the low point of the driveway, usually across the entrance or along the boundary. Water flows into the channel and is piped to a soakaway or, where permitted, to a surface water drain. Aco drains are compatible with all surface types and are the standard solution for solid-surface driveways.
**Soakaways** are underground chambers — traditionally rubble-filled pits, now more often plastic crate systems — that receive the collected water and allow it to percolate into the surrounding soil. They work well in free-draining soils but are not suitable for heavy clay without a large crate volume. A soakaway for a typical Bray driveway costs €400–€900 to install, depending on size and access.
**Permeable paving** — gravel, open-jointed block paving, or resin bound aggregate — allows water to pass through the surface directly into a permeable sub-base and from there into the ground. This is the cleanest SUDS solution because it requires no separate drainage infrastructure. Resin bound is the premium option: fully permeable, low-maintenance and visually clean. Open-jointed block paving is a mid-range alternative that retains the look of traditional paving.
Protecting your home's foundation from damp
A driveway that slopes towards the house — or one where the surface level has risen over time through resurfacing — can direct water towards the building's damp-proof course. This is a particular risk in older Bray properties where the original driveway was laid at a lower level and subsequent overlays have raised it.
The fix is to ensure the driveway falls away from the house at a minimum gradient of 1:80 (1.25%), and that there is a channel drain or gully between the driveway and the building's wall. If the driveway level is within 150mm of the damp-proof course, a drainage channel is not optional — it is essential.
